Rufus King

  • Rufus King was born on March 24, 1755 in Scarborough, Massachusetts
  • He represented Massachusetts in the Constitutional Convention
  • He attended Harvard, but stopped when the Revolutionary war started
  • He fought in the battle of Lexington & Concord
  • He went back to Harvard after the British withdrew and finished his studies in 1777
  • He opposed the expansion of slavery into the Northwest Territory & proposed that slavery be prohibited in that area
  • This prohibition became law in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787
  • He served as the U.S ambassador to the U.K from 1796 to 1803 ad in 1825 to 1826
  • He was a union Brigadier General in the American Civil War
  • He studied law with Theophilus Parsons
  • He was one of the members that was assigned the duty of making a final draft of the constitution of the U.S
  • Rufus King passed away on April 29, 1827 in New York
  • His home, now called the King Manor, is a museum and is open to the public
